"Beading Vintage-Style Jewelry: Easy Projects with Elegant Heirloom Appeal" (Lark/Sterling Publishing) by Marty Stevens-Heebner and her colleague Christine Calla, even goes with our recycling theme because there’s a section on revamping jewelry you’ve already got. We usually call it “cannibalizing” but our publisher suggested the tamer “revamping” moniker. And given what a spectacular job they did photographing everything and laying out the book, right down to the terrific type fonts, we decided to heed their advice. We love love love this book, and can honestly say we’d buy it…if we hadn’t already written it. The jewelry designs are guaranteed to make you sparkle, the instructions are clear and we made sure to provide plenty of inspiration. Also, given that Marty’s a thorough history geek (“And proud of it!” says she), she took it upon herself to study the history of jewelry – so there’s a whole bunch of “Tidbits” sprinkled throughout the book that tell you things like what the first recipe for making fake pearls was. Snail slime was one of the key ingredients. Yep – snail…slime.
